THE DOME OF DISCOVERY: OUTER SPACE (SB13)

What we have learned from the old astronomy of Newton, and from the new astronomy which uses radio methods.

"The explorers of outer space are the astronomers. Their intellect and imagination have reached out and brought back the knowledge that makes possible the displays on this gallery of the Dome.

One of the immediately practical uses of astronomy is the accurate determination of time, and with that subject the narrative begins. It continues then by presenting a summary of what we know about a number of heavenly bodies and of such things as the birth and life of stars.

The giant among the astronomers of the past is Newton. Nowadays, equipped with new tools that the physicists have developed, we can amplify the results of his studies and those of other great observers. A working example of this new astronomy is the radio telescope. Visitors will be able to see signals being sent to the moon and watch their return on reflection after a lapse of about two and a half seconds."
