THE DOME OF DISCOVERY: SKY (SB13)

Weather forecasting and research. Exploration into the ionsphere, which improves long-distance radio communication.

"Here, on this gallery of the Dome, the visitor is invited to lift his eyes upward- first of all to that near region of the sky where our weather forms. Metorological science is relatively young, and what is shown here is the result of about one hundred years of observation and study. Among the displays which summarise what we know now about our weather is a real forecasting station operated by a group of experts.

From here the narrative of exploration goes upward to about 250 miles above the earth's surface. In this region are the so-called ionised layers of the atmosphere. How they make it possible for radio signals to travel for great distances is shown by a number of dynamic displays."
