UPSTREAM CIRCUIT - "THE LAND" : Sea and Ships (SB8)
Ship building, propelling machinery and the fisheries.
"The theme borne out by this Pavilion is that, great as British achievement in shipbuilding has been in the past, our greater achivement has been in bringing about the developments and advances that a changing world has demanded.
After a brief look-back at the past, the visitor can follow the contemporary story of ships' engines, propellers, ship design and construction, to the culminating display where models show how Britain bulids ships for every specialised purpose.
An important section gives attention to the fishing industry and the great part science and improved design are playing in its continued development -not only in vessels and gear, but in the more certain location of the fish and their better preservation after they are caught.
The Pavilion contains a ship testing tank. Demonstrations here show how science contributes to modern under-water design by carrying out experiments on model hulls before the final drawings for new ships are completed."
