THE DOME OF DISCOVERY : THE SEA (SB13)
The great heritage of Drake and Cook has passed to the marine scientists who are yearly adding to our knowledge of the sea.
"Several nations have had their period of pre-eminence in exploration by sea, but with the British it has been a cumulative characteristic. Our most outstanding personality of the past is James Cook. He was followed by a number of other hydrographers who together produced charts of the world for seamen of all nations to use. Nor did the work of marine surveying stop there. Improvements are still being made in instruments and equipment, with the result that our charts gain yearly in accuracy and detail.
But Britain's exploration of the seas has not been confined to its surface waters. About a hundred years ago true scientific investigation began of all its aspects, down to the ocean beds themselves. The second half of this section describes what we know nowadays of the nature and behaviour of the seas at all depths and of the plants and animals they contain."
