UPSTREAM CIRCUIT - "THE LAND" : Power and Production (SB4)

Highlights in the growth of present-day industry - the lifeline of Britain, with many examples of first-class design and production.

"Our natural skills and the minerals of the island made us the first workshop of the world. It was in Britain that the machine age was born. Industry is now our lifeline.

Of so great a field as British industry, it is impossible to show more than a sample in this Pavilion. The heavier aspects are the subject of the separate, but complementary, Exhibition of Industrial Power in the Kelvin Hall, Glasgow. Here on the South Bank, the narrative runs through the following chapters: - power, lighting, metals in the service of man, the distribution and make-up of industry including research, design, testing, management, production and commerce.

The working of no single industry is demonstrated as a complete story, but six groups of industries have been chosen so that some of their main achievements and the processes they use may be explained. Here, too, are visible working examples of machines and craftsmen showing British contributions to modern production methods.

Lastly, a showroom gives an indication of the versatility of British industry in quality and design."
