THE DOME OF DISCOVERY: POLAR (SB13)

A great tradition now applied particularly to scientific discovery and aided by mechanisation. Demonstrations in the Polar theatre.

"The islands of Britain do not see great variations in climate, yet it is characteristic of the British people to seek out those regions where the climate is extreme and to prise their secrets from them. Exploration in the polar regions may have begun in response to an an economic urge, but ever since those early days it has been a challenge particularly luring to our spirit.

To-day, such exploration is as much alive as it ever was, and it has a strong scientific purpose. This section shows the severe peculiarities of life and travel in the polar regions, and shows the modern techniques and reasons for overcoming them."
