Science is revealing the age and structure of the earth. Technology develops its underground resources.
"Here is the story of exploration downwards, by digging, boring, experiment and scientific reasoning, towards the centre of the earth. Its most obvious result is the discovery of the mineral riches of the outer crust. But by such exploration we are also learning increasingly more about the age and structure of the earth, a planet full of life on the surface and still alive within.
By elucidating the meaning of the rocks on the surface, British geologists were able to show the world how to make maps which revealed the hidden structures deeper down. These are the sure guide for all miners of to-day. The physicists probe deeper still, returning with reasons for these structures and the changes that brought them about. At the surface the archaeologists work, reconstructing the past civilisations of the world."
