UPSTREAM CIRCUIT - "THE LAND" : The Country (SB3)
A highly mechanised and most efficiently farmed countryside results from long experience, aided by science and engineering.
"Today we claim the most highly mechanised and perhaps, the most efficiently farmed countryside in the world. Another feature that distinguishes our farming from that in any other country is its diversity. This is the keynote of this Pavilion's story. Complementary to this diversity in farming is the quality of its products, which centuries ago set standards we have maintained ever since.
A reflection of the astonishing variety of types of farmland in the British Isles is the range of superb beef and dairy cattle bred here. They still have one of the surest markets in the world. Actual beasts will be seen in this pavilion- not only cattle, but horses, sheeps, pigs, goats and poultry. Much is shown, too, of milk - one of the most valuable products of our land.
Crop production and stockbreeding have advanced greatly with the application of science. The most spectacular advance of recent times, however is seen in mechanisation.
But great as our achievement and our reputation are, they cannot enlarge our country. Britain will always be small, and if its land is to be used to its full advantage these uses must be planned. The displays here end with a consideration of this problem."
